For many, August is “back to school” month and I’ve been pondering an important question in light of this: How do we maximize these last few weeks as a family?

Here’s some ideas worth considering:

1. Go on a “date” with each of your kids.

We all say “time goes by too fast” don’t we? Slow it down a bit with some one-on-one time with each of your kids. Make it as fun as possible, shut your phone off and do whatever they want to do (within reason, of course!)

2. Talk through the fall schedule

As a family, chat through what’s coming up this fall. Does everyone know about Dad’s work trip in October? Or band camp coming up in September? Sit down and talk things through… Where are the busy days? Busy months? How can we help each other out? Create a family calendar if you don’t already have one so everyone knows what to expect.

3. Connect with your best friends

I’m sure you had a blast connecting with friends Memorial Day weekend, but have you connected since? Get together with those friends you enjoy and perhaps put some fall dates on the calendar so it isn’t Thanksgiving before you get together again!

4. Schedule rest first

Before “crazy” starts, designate some times of intentional rest. No doubt there will be plenty happening between now and the end of the year. Many of us tend to over fill our calendars. Before you know it there’s no time for rest, family time or date nights. So, schedule these first – all the way through to the end of the year.

5. Do that final “fun” thing

Haven’t see Jurassic World yet? Want to get to the lake or theme park one last time? Take time to think these last few days before fall begins. Come the Tuesday after Labor day – you’ll be glad you did!

Our family will be engaging with the final few things before we head into the new school year. We hope these things help you to be prepared and ready for another fall season!
