At first glance, the headline of this article might seem to be a bit…well…self-centered. We are all familiar with the concepts of servant leadership, so why am I suggesting that you put yourself first?

Here is the truth we all need to know: self-prioritization is the first step to prioritizing others. I know it sounds counter intuitive, but we can only lead and serve others if we are living healthy and emotionally intelligent lives. Think about it this way, if you have had the chance to fly on a plane you must have heard how the flight attendant instructs you to put your oxygen mask on first, before assisting others. Yes, you must put on your own oxygen mask before assisting your parent, sibling, partner or child. While this process might sound selfish, it does not show a lack of love or care for others. Rather, this act of self care shows a deep understanding of the fact that you are of no help to anyone if you run out of oxygen.

Great leaders, managers, parents, and spouses understand the importance of prioritizing themselves so that they can have influence and impact in the lives of others. We need to prioritize ourselves spiritually, mentally, and physically to ensure that those who need us get the best we have to offer.

Another component of prioritizing yourself is a continued effort to know yourself more fully. In order to lead yourself or influence others, you need to continually know yourself better. This is one component of what we commonly refer to as, “Emotional Intelligence.” You might increase your emotional intelligence through reading, coaching, or any other personal development strategy. Remember, investing in yourself is the first step to showing up powerfully in the lives of others.
